It was Julius Caesar who is credited with much of Tarragona’s improvements. Pontius Pilate was born here while his father was governor of the city.
Tarragona, 60 miles southwest of Barcelona, sits picturesquely 525 feet above the Mediterranean. The old town occupies the southern side of the rocky hill. The Palace of Augustus houses an archaeological museum that provides an interesting study of the city’s origin. Of major interest, too, are the Roman amphitheater and the cathedral, built in the 12th and 13th centuries on a site that had previously been occupied by a Roman temple and a Moorish mosque.
Views of the sea and coast can be had from the Balcón del Mediterráneo, at the south end of the tree-lined Rambla Nova. To the east extends the beautiful Paseo de les Palmeres avenue, laid out in terraces.

Pier Information. Your ship is scheduled to dock at Muelle Costa. The distance to the center of town is approximately half a mile. Taxis are generally available on the pier.
Shopping. Shop at the market, along the Rambla Nova, and the pedestrian streets in the city center (the Carre Major and Carre Mendez Nunez). The old town boasts numerous antique shops and art galleries.
Cuisine. Tarragona’s tasty local dishes consist of seafood blended with olive oil, hazelnuts, almonds, sweet peppers, onions, garlic, and tomatoes.

Other Sights
Passeig Arqueologic. This half-mile walk, shaded by cypresses, passes 2200-year-old city walls, grottos,  gardens, and a bronze statue of Augustus.
Roman Pretorium. This 2,000-year old fortress is said to be the birthplace of Pontius Pilate.
Archaeological Museum. Housing one of Spain’s finest collections of Roman art,  of particular interest are the famous MedUSA’s head and
a number of mosaics.
Museum of Modern Art & Jewish Quarter. Adjoining the Roman Pretorium is the Museum of Modern Art. To its south extends the former Jewish quarter of Tarragona.

Golf.
The Club Golf Costa Dorada, set on hills among pine and olive trees, offers beautiful views of the Mediterranean.
