   Belém, founded by the Portuguese in 1616 as the City of Our Lady of Bethlehem (Belém),  is the great port of the Amazon. Belém rapidly became  an Indian slaving port and a source for cacao and spices. The great rubber boom at the end of the 19th century gave the city  its great revival and wide avenues that lead from the impressive Praça da Republica down to the port, past a historical sector still replete with Portuguese colonial architecture.  

Pier Information The ship is scheduled to dock at Escadinha pier. Take a taxi to town, and be sure to negotiate the fare before setting out. Walking is unsafe. Shopping Crafts (Marajó Indian pottery and Amazonia souvenir items), as well as local perfumes, are among the best buys in Belém. The major shopping areas are along Avenida Presidente Vargas. Cuisine Specialties include succulent steaks, grilled or served with tasty sauces. The most famous dish is pato no tucupi, which is duck stewed in fermented manioc and chicory sauce. Only drink bottled beverages. Other Sights The spectacular Teatro da Paz, and the excellent Goeldi Museum and Zoological Gardens. Lauro Sodre Palace Located on Praça Dom Pedro, this gracious 18th-century Italianate building contains Brazil’s largest framed painting, The Conquest of Amazonia. Belém Market Ver-o-Peso, meaning see the weight, is one of the most colorful markets in South America. Please Note: Caution is advised when walking around the market area as it is a popular hangout for pickpockets.
