Also known as the Outer Hebrides (pronounced
heb-rih-deeze), the Western Isles*
form a 130-mile arc of over 500 islands off the northwestern coast of Scotland. Lewis is the largest and most northerly of these islands, and Stornoway, its capital, is your base. Its deep sheltered harbor is home to the Ullapool ferry and the fishing boats that tie up at Cromwell Street Quay and sell their catch at Tuesday and Thursday evening markets.
