The Isle of Man was early on the home of British aristocrats, who built castles and large estates. In the 19th century, the island was quite sporting, with paddle steamers, dance halls, and beauty contests. The most famous of all motorbike races, the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, was started in 1906.
  During the 20th century the island returned to a conservatism and also achieved a large measure of self-government. The island is still home to some rich residents, and international banking is big business here.
   Tourists today enjoy the transport system of horse trams, steam trains, and  trolleys. Douglas still resembles an English resort of a century ago.
